With AI, SEO is becoming more complicated - here is what you need to know.

AI works both ways, in your favor and against you.

These days, depending on what query you use in your search, you are increasingly likely to first see an AI answer. That is an answer that Google's AI engines, like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Copilot, find. The good news for the "searcher" is that they will likely find the answer they were looking for in this AI-generated description. The bad news for you, the SEO person, is that this answer can take up half of the page, leaving less room for the blue links that you are used to optimizing through traditional SEO. The other bad news, depending on how you look at it, is that if people find the answer they were looking for, they will not click on anything else—including your links. That means that clicks on links will inevitably decrease, and since many managers still consider that a measure of success, that can be a challenge to explain.

(see top figure to see how answers can get displayed)

Liz Reid, the VP of Google Search, actually has a great explanation for how Search is changing. You can watch the video in the sidebar or click here to hear it.

The good news in all of that is that you can actually optimize your SEO to become part of the answers that get generated by AI engines. For me, it's still trial and error, but I am starting to get great results.

If you are starting to develop a deep understanding of AI, AI can also be a powerful tool for your SEO in general. You can easily analyze competitor articles from other vendors that write on the same topic, and you can have your titles better reflect what people actually search for on the topics you want to write about. It can also be a powerful tool to report back on progress to your clients.

So now, in addition to traditional SEO, you need to develop strategies to get into the "people also ask" section, make it into galleries if that is important to you, and get into "the featured/special snippets." One more challenge has been added to your work—how do you access the AI responses?

We would love to hear your comments or questions about the details of how to make that work, so comment away, or if you want to keep your ideas more private, email us.
